What is Welcome Money?The city of Potsdam provides every student who moves his or her first residency to Potsdam a welcome money stipend (Begrüßungsgeld) of 50€ per semester. Registering a first residency for the purpose of studying (“zum Zweck des Studiums”) status will be granted when a beginning student applies not before 01 January for the summer semester or not before 01 July for the winter semester. Students already studying in Potsdam are granted welcome money if their first residency was not established in Potsdam prior to 01 July 2001. Students already studying in Potsdam from the incorporated villages Fahrland, Golm, Groß Glienicke, Marquardt, Neu Fahrland, Satzkorn, and Uetz-Paaren are granted welcome money if their first residency was not established there prior to 01 July 2003. Welcome money is granted in general if the student has his or her first residency in Potsdam on 30 June and 31 December of every year. Who pays the welcome money?The Studentenwerk Potsdam carries out the wire transfers of the welcome money as early as shortly after the deadlines (30 June and 31 December) and as late as the end of the respective semester. Application forms can be obtained at the Studentenwerk Potsdam or the Citizens’ Service Office (Bürgerservice) of the city of Potsdam. What must I do to receive welcome money?The application (in German) must be personally submitted every semester before 30 June for the summer semester or 31 December for the winter semester. Please note any coming holidays when submitting your application. In addition to the application, please bring the following documents with you:
More questions regarding registering with the authorities?Are students in a residence hall required to register their address with the authorities? Yes, registration with the Resident Registration Office is required for all persons living in Germany without exception.
Do students have a choice between their first residency and second residency? No, according to the Brandenburg Resident Registration Act (Brandenburgisches Meldegesetz) because first residency is determined to be the primarily used residency.
When does one have to announce changes at the Resident Registration Office? Always, i.e. when your address changes, even if you are leaving Potsdam, and when the use of the residency changes from first to second residency or vice-versa.
What are the deadlines for registering or announcing changes? According to law, the deadline for registering and deregistering or for announcing other changes is two weeks after the date in which this event occurred.
What are the punishments for not following the requirements or for providing false information? Missing a deadline for registration and deregistration or for announcing changes in use of residency or willingly providing false information are summary offences and may lead to a warning or a fine of up to 500€.
