Our homesharing project „Wohnen für Hilfe“ (launched in January 2020) has gotten off to a successful start in Potsdam. As of the beginning of 2022, we have ten housing partnerships between Potsdam locals and students from all over the world.
Dog sitting in exchange for affordable accomodation: For two years, the Studentenwerk Potsdam has been bringing people together in housing partnerships. Potsdam locals with spare rooms offer students a room in exchange for support and company.
We currently have ten housing partnerships, seven of which are between students and elderly people. The Beyer couple especially appreciates the cultural exchange with their new roommate, who moved into their adult son's former room: "Little by little, Carolina is introducing us to the customs of her homeland, and she has cooked us a Mexican meal several times.“
International students in particular have found a place to stay through "Wohnen für Hilfe." In total, nine different nations are represented among those placed, including Colombia, Russia and Nigeria. The assistance requested by housing providers in the project varies: Household and gardening help are in high demand - as are weekly shopping, childcare or simply the desire for company in everyday life. From the granny apartment to the lockable room with shared spaces such as the kitchen and bathroom - the types of housing on offer also vary.
"Wohnen für Hilfe" in figures:
Since the start of the project, there have been 193 inquiries from students, 39 inquiries from housing providers, 81 get-to-know-you meetings and 13 placements (as of 09.02.2022).
