FAQ – Student Housing

Here we answer frequently asked questions about student housing. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

You are entering the state of Brandenburg from a Corona risk area?

You are entering the state of Brandenburg and have visited a risk area within 14 days before entering (see risk areas currently incl. Berlin (DE)). Then you will have to go into a 14-day quarantine directly after your entry.

Since the dormitories of the Studentenwerk Potsdam are shared accommodations, the quarantine period cannot be spent in the dormitory. Please look for other accommodation for this transitional period. You can only move into the dormitories after the quarantine period.

You can provide us with a confirmation from the responsible health authority with a negative corona test result and a medical certificate? Then you do not have to go into quarantine and can move into your room in the dormitory immediately. The test result may not be older than 48 hours and must have been certified in Germany.

Then you must also follow the quarantine regulations mentioned above. You can only move into your room after the 14-day quarantine period away from the student residence. Of course, you also have the option of presenting a confirmation from the public health department (with a negative test result) (see above).

Please fill out the form "Eidesstattliche Versicherung zur Ein-/Rückreise aus einem Risikogebiet für SARS-CoV-2 (DE)" (Affidavit for entry/return from a high-risk area for SARS-CoV-2) together with the necessary documents. Send the documents to: wohnen[at]studentenwerk-potsdam.de

We will then check whether we can offer you a free place in a student residence.

Again, the quarantine period cannot be spent in the dormitory of the Studentenwerk Potsdam.

Application Process

Apply as soon as possible if you are planning to study in Potsdam, Brandenburg an der Havel or in Wildau – even if you have not yet been admitted. A cancellation is possible until the conclusion of the contract.

You have questions? Please send your general inquiries exclusively to the e-mail address wohnen@studentenwerk-potsdam.de. We kindly ask you to refrain from multiple inquiries, as these will delay our work processes.

We have summarized the application process for you here.

You may be eligible if you study at one of the following universities:

  • Universität Potsdam
  • Fachhochschule Potsdam
  • Film Universität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF
  • Technische Hochschule Brandenburg
  • Technische Hochschule Wildau

Am I eligible? Find out in our procurement directive!
Procurement Directive (EN)

You are not eligible if:

  • You work most of the time and have a regular income from gainful employment
  • You are a PhD student, a doctoral candidate or a trainee teacher
  • You have been given notice of termination in a previous rental relationship with the Studentenwerk Potsdam
  • You have already lived in a residential hall of the Studentenwerk Potsdam up to the maximum duration
  • You have liabilities from renting or other liabilities toward the Studentenwerk Potsdam
  • You have completed a total of 10 or more university semesters and/or have reached the age of 30 at the time of application

  • You have been banned from entering the residential halls by the Studentenwerk Potsdam
  • You are or have been living in one of the accommodations of the Studentenwerk Potsdam without a valid rental agreement or consent of the Studentenwerk Potsdam

The earlier we receive your application, along with your admission/study certificate, the better are your chances of finding a place. If you are flexible in the choice of housing and living arrangements, your chances will increase.

Please understand that we cannot provide any concrete information here and please refrain from making enquiries.

If you are not eligible, you will only have a chance of a temporary rental agreement if there is free capacity. As a rule of thumb, this is more likely to be the case in the summer semester, as the demand for a place in one of our dormitories is very high during the winter semester.

After we have received your admission/study certificate, you will receive an offer according to the order of your application, provided that places in a dormitory become available.
For Potsdam the process of allocation begins in August, for Brandenburg an der Havel and Wildau in July.

Generally, your application is only valid during the semester, you have signed in for. If you want to pursue your application in the following semester/semesters, you have to apply again every semester.

Subletting is only possible if you temporarily live somewhere else during your studies (e.g. semester abroad, compulsory internship) and for a remaining period of time until the end of the contract (when the contract is terminated). Illegal subletting and subletting with the intention of making a profit (rent surcharge) always lead to termination of the tenancy.

Due to high demand, the chances of moving to another hall of residence during the semester are quite low. It is not possible to move at the start of a new semester. For moving requests, please use online relocation application form.

The room must be handed over at the latest by 10 am on the last working day before the end of the rental agreement in an orderly, tidy and re-rentable condition.

If you are not in arrears, you can get the certificate of exemption from rent debts here: regber[at]studentenwerk-potsdam.de
